It all depends on what you do and where you live. In general there are huge property bubbles and our government doesn't have a Singapore style HBD system so we are stuck renting at market rates which can be very high if you are in the cities.

When my business was struggling I took a night job at the loblaws warehouse to get by and at 21$ an hour. I used to make that kind of money doing part time jobs when i was in high school. After tax i barely got 700$ a week.

I also tried to get a job at the honda plant. It paid 17$ an hour. Plus all hiring was done for the whole plant through a temp agency so basically they were probably originally paying 30$ an hour but now the temp agency gets to pocket the difference. Unbeleivable.
