The Greek world also didn't belong to the Romans, but it was adopted by them through philhellenism and conquest. Northern Europe likewise adopted the heritage of the Greco-Roman world.

The Enlightenment did instill a respect for secularism and scientific advancement that's fairly universal across the West.

All right, I'll give a serious reply.
Europe is like a forest, where countries are like trees planted close to each other. Way too close.
As time went on, some trees grew bigger and bigger, taking nutrition and water from the ground and blocking the sunlight. These trees grew even bigger, while other trees struggled to grow and remained relatively small. The smaller trees could grow, but they can't, due to lack of resources. The only chance for the smaller trees to break out from the shadow is through the big ones falling from a storm or dying from an infection. Of course, some trees will get crushed by the falling giants. But others will survive and get more than enough water and sunlight, so the growing race can begin again.
This is what Europe is about. And as it looks now, some giants will fall sooner or later, since nasty worms are eating their roots away.
