I worked in one of the "nicer" ones (I worked in the kitchen) and even there most of the STNAs they had were teenage girls who could not care less about their job

I did that with my mom, in fact, me and my brother did our absolute best to care for our parents, after the other siblings moved out. Mom went through a lot and never really told anyone about her health issues, which made it impossible to get accurate and fast enough care before her health spun out of control. Dad was the opposite, in that he didn't want anyone taking care of him, didn't want anyone telling him what to do, but didn't want to live in a retirement community OR on his own. After mom passed, all of dad's underling issues came to light, once he had a stroke after decades of neglecting his health and forcing himself to go back to work. He ultimately ended up in a nursing home after dementia set in, and he had a psychotic break, and ended up destroying everything in the house, which almost ended with the cops shooting him, if not for my brother and I showing up. As a former full-time caregiver, by law, you can't force your parents to seek medical care without permission, even if it's in their best interest. It's only after they literally can not make choices for themselves, or you draw up DPA papers, after they're disabled, say by losing their vision/ability to walk that you can get a means to step in, barring shitty people in your family interfering.

Nursing homes are a death sentence for your loved ones, but unless your parents let you handle their care or you have an understanding. Most people don't even take time to think about setting up a life insurance policy, much less managing their own health to care for their parents. Bullshit aside, my heart goes out to the people who care for the mentally ill, disabled and unstable. Also, fuck the healthcare industry for going out of its way to sabotage people in need for momentary gain.
