i'm no genius but i just don't understand this whole social distancing thing. why? >we're afraid of getting the virus! ok, but how does social distancing and self-isolation help? so you don't get the virus today, but you're still just as likely to get it a month from now. the timeline just plays out in slow motion. the curve still goes up, it just gets stretched out. >but we can keep health services from being overburdened! ok, maybe. but the big problem with this whole thing is that no one seems to be able to answer the question, UNTIL WHEN? do you expect the virus to be completely gone and infection rate 0% by mid-april or may? it's like no one thought that far ahead. they just panic and run into their burrows and assume that at some point the virus is just going to disappear, yet at the same time believe it's so apocalyptically devastating that nothing can be done about it except hiding? it's like this entire strategy is being undertaken without any conscious thought, and now if you try to criticize it you get attacked by rabid totalitarians telling you you need to just shut up and obey, to say nothing of the storm of propaganda from every single celebrity/public figure churning out "obey" videos on youtube.
i'm not even saying I necessarily disagree with all this. but it just doesn't seem like anyone can put together a convincing enough package. maybe i'm wrong on this but it seems to be like it's going to be almost impossible to not get the virus, but there's a 98% chance it won't fucking do anything to you. so, some small percentage of the world's most vulnerable population is going to get shaved off, and life goes on. is this wrong? can anyone sell me on the idea that if we just keep our heads buried for another couple months the virus will go away forever and ever and we'll never have to worry about it anymore? not rhetorical: is the damage to the economy, job sector, and our everyday life and culture worth that 2%?

you are not wrong. Flattening the curve only works if the hospitals are getting filled, otherwise you are just postponing the curve.
Realistically they are waiting for Covid testing that can be done on site in a few minutes, a reasonable treatment so that at least younger people don't get put on respirators and (for next year) a vaccine.
That is why everybody is against trumps malaria drug, a reasonable cure for younger people is one third of the battle and would be a huge win for the administration
