Peasants were "free" people not indentured like serfs were. They shared devastating poverty as a daily reality though, couldn't own fruit bearing trees, nor marry outside if their class. Not only this they needed the permission of their Lord to marry. The marriage needed to be approved of. If the Lord saw fit to "break her in" prior to their wedding, he was able to do so. They had "vacation" simply because fruits and grain don't grow in the winter time. So they sat around for half the year subsisting on scraps until the warmer weather brought sustenance. Doesn't sound as luxurious as my last trip to Aachen Germany to visit my Grandparents.
