They used to worship the moon, their calendar is based upon it. With Christianity came worship of the Sun, our calendar is based upon it. Christians used to have to consult Jews about when Easter would be on a given year, bcuz Jews would keep track of the full moons, whereas Christians often didn't.
The sun is pretty simple to keep track of, bcuz the ecliptic has no tilt. However, the Earth's tilt, which gives us seasons causes some problems. Particularly, the fact that tilt precesses, causes seasons to shift with respect to the year over the course of thousands of years. Pope Gregory most recently made the adjustment to help account of that by removing like 4 leap years from every 400 years or something. The last adjustment before then was by Julius Caesar.
Tracking the orbits of the moons are kind of a lot more complicated. The moon has an orbital tilt, that precesses in two different directions at once(apsidal, and nodal precessions). This is difficult to keep track of, and is one of the chief problems Newton and even Einstein were trying to solve: how to make more accurate lunar predictions.
One thing you have to learn is that science and religion were once the same thing, and found much of their origins in astronomy. Early churches and monks were keepers of astronomical records and dates, which was data that is needed in order construct the formulas needed to construct calendars, which are needed in order to worship HOLY-days. Religion and Churches were the principle keepers of Calendars, and it took a hell of a lot of science to be able to create them; which had to be hidden and smokescreened with a bunch of mystic mumbo jumbo.
So, Jews were some old people from long before the Christians who worshiped the Moon, and still kind of do. or sumthing. I dunno.
