The honest answer to this is because they had to live around them. Simple as that. People who actually have to live around blacks and integrate with them generally come to hate them. In the north you have all of this supposed "progressivism", but the north is mostly white, and de-facto segregated with blacks in shit ghettos where it isn't. So in the end, whites in the north basically don't really or hardly ever mix with actual blacks. They esp don't mix with blacks in large numbers, or where blacks are in a majority and feel comfortable. When you get to be the only white person around a horde of roving niggers in the street, then you start to see real quick just how correct all of the "racists" are, or else you may literally fucking die.

It's mostly due to the welfare and education. Each groups of people in America voluntary stick to their own kind, proving that multiculturalism does not work. No one bothered to resolve any lingering resentments between whites and blacks because Lincoln kinda forgot to explain Reconstruction well. A long time later, MLK made the outsiders force the descendants to obey social progress, but failed to resolve any resentments either. Time and education has slowly made the white side of this debacle move on, but now there is the problem of the black side.
