This, Pontius Pilate attempted to sidestep the issue multiple times. He did not want to execute what he saw as a seemingly innocent man. The mob of Jews and Pharisees wailed and demanded that Jesus be put to death. He gave them a democratic choice between a murderer and Jesus, and they shouted to release the murderer and crucify Jesus. Pilot couldn't believe it, however he couldn't stop it at that point.
