I was just watching a documentary where the guy was saying 6 other cities in Japan had worse damage from conventional bombing than the 2 cities that were allegedly "nuked" had. Given the lack of the internet and cell phones and all that stuff back then, it wouldn't have been very difficult to just bomb the shit out of Nagasaki and Hiroshima with regular bombs, and then say they were totaled by some boogeyman scientific breakthrough type of bomb.

It's comparatively easy to get a hold of some radioactive material, like from old medical devices, put them in a medium size explosive and explode it in some major city spreading toxic radioactive particles across several miles of populated land.
