I'm literally learning the advanced parts C right now, so I can literally speak against this. The only reason why it's impossible to write safe C is because of the sheer flexibility of it as a general purpose programming language. It created the Linux kernel, and practically every essential program that comes with it, ranging from basic utilities ported over from UNIX to desktop environments made by delusional trannies, it has overcome obscurity time-after-time with every update and iteration.
COBOL, however, is relevant for finance, but nearing irrelevancy because the feds have no fucking idea how to update their financial systems. In actuality, the COBOL that's used in-- lets say, what the governor of New Jersey wants the great people of America to volunteer for. It consists of a ~50 year old iteration with unarchived documentation created by some literal-who company that's probably defunct as of 20 years ago. Hard to maintain, hard to learn, all because stuff will go to shit otherwise.
That entire body of text above was completely unnecessary, because, as stated earlier, C is MULTIPURPOSE, and COBOL is only used in FINANCE. My fucking god tw*ttards are stupid.

C also allows you to finely optimize your program to the smallest degree. Efficiency being de-emphasized is leading to the trend of nigger spaghetti code prevalent in last decade's tech.

COBOL is only used in finance because it’s really old, the first financial systems were written on it, and no one in finance knows how to code so no one wants to touch it.

As a programmer I lost a lot of respect for Grace Hopper after I started to actually learn COBOL. There are some nice aspects to it, but the language is a fucking mess overall. There's no reason it should be as verbose as it is. The attempt to make it human readable by giving it so many keywords has the opposite effect, and the language is actually more difficult to learn because of it. It was a neat idea and certainly prescient of the military to predict that businesses would one day use computers en masse, but it's dated as fuck. There's a reason no one teaches/uses it anymore outside of horribly outdated government mainframes.

"safe" being memory safety.
Most of the bugs in larger C projects are entirely related to memory leaks and you can also get a lot of undefined behaviour.
C and Unix created a computing revolution and without them computing would likely be vastly different today.
COBOL is utter garbage that should have been retired decades ago.

For safety-critical systems you need to either prove or test. This works with any language.
