How did mexican cartels get so powerful?

How did mexican cartels get so powerful?
I have never understood this,
>Colombians, Cubans, Dominicans and Chinese gangsters have been pushing drugs for years, but they don't take over the government.
>Lots of gangsters have guns, the italian mafia and the yakusa have guns and even political power, but nowhere near what the cartels have.
>Black gangs in America and even Africa have used brutal violence
>Every military on earth has a few members who are criminals (it happens in EVERY large organization) so how did Mexico get a ton of cartels in their military?
>Indian police are corrupt, but the mobs don't run india
How did the cartels essentially take over mexico? It makes no sense.

CIA

Go beat them up

This and the ((mexican government)) gets gibs from the cartel.

Because their main customers are the USA, and the American dollar goes at least 20x as far as their domestic currency. Since drug lords can support their whole operation singlehandedly, they become feudal lords.

They didn't tell you?
