Because they are too stupid to figure out how within their grasp it is. It is not hard to find a cheap enough house... I'm currently looking at a 4,000 sqft stone (not brick, og stone) house on 10 acres of woods and pasture going for less than 200k.

affordable houses like this are in the middle of nowhere. if you can't work remote, good luck finding a job that pays the mortgage.

Most property is actually at megative value.
The houses are mostly in such a bad state that the repairs/demolition cost more than the value of the property.
they teach this in realty but them immediately ignore it in the real world since most properties are currently so unkempt that no one wants to admit the truth of the market.

They only want to live in cities where there is major economic activity and houses cost an arm and a leg. Also they generally are not raised to value ownership or maintenence of anything, just rent borrow or loan.

Compare that to my family's homes in Europe where they're made of real wood, stone, and brick and you start to understand what's up.
