I'd argue if you were unified by a tyrant, you don't count. Real countries are manifestations of thousands of years of land and roots, not some bloodthirsty asswipe imposing his will. France and the "UK" are less legitimate countries than Scotland, Basque nation, etc.

Dutch and German share a common linguistic ancestor, which was closer to modern day Dutch than German. Of course if you go back far enough they say that most languages share a common ancestor (indo european), but I am talking about a more recent development here. That doesn't mean we aren't different nations and peoples, we became that when this shift took place, and any political developments that lead to us being different political entities cannot be seen as separate from that. We developed into a country because we spoke the same language to a degree, with dialects perhaps, but still mutually understandable.
