The viruses live in symbioses with the bats. Bats need constantly food cause of their high metabolism and small size, so whenever there is a shortage in insekts the viruses activate themselves (like herpes) and kill a part of the population, thus saving the rest from starvation.

Bats have supercharged mitochondria to power flight and their immune systems are very aggressive. They are freaks of regeneration and tissue repair (mostly because bony skin wings) that live for decades instead of the 2 years that things like mice get. Any disease that lives in them is selected towards extreme virulence because the bat’s immune system curbstops it into extinction otherwise.

Flying dogs feed on fruits and flowers, a mutch more stable food source so I would be surprised if the´d carry a lot of "population control viruses".
