They have observational value, and that observational value grows the more people that are tested on. If you had a drug that say, cured people, even those in ICU, within 12 hours, while people who continued to take nothing died anyway, even if you have thousands and thousands of reports saying the same thing, you still have no evidentiary value, just observational.
The point is you eventually reach a point where observational value is clearly showing its working. You're only technically right that evidentiary value isn't there, but to claim that's equal to being a useless anecdote that we can derive nothing from? Give me a break.

I think you meant since. Yes it has been around since the 40s so we understand side effects really well. But it has only been used to treat SARS-2 for about two months, so we have very little understanding of it's relationship with the virus.
A double blind study would be to remove any doubts that this drug, or a combination of this drug with others (Say zinc) is effective for treating SARS-2. There is a really good reason for the FDA's drug use vetting process. We want to make sure that the known effectiveness of our drugs is based on airtight evidence, not expert opinion.
