This topic is actually something I've contemplated a bit. it's mostly a thing young adults/teenagers do when they talk about females their age. They don't want to say "women" because that sounds like old people, but if they say "girls" then it sounds like children. So of course to avoid this problem they say "female", but this sounds unnatural and awkward in most cases.
