"race" is a subspecific categorization. the difference between subspecies and species classifications isn't clearcut, but basically if extremes of the population can still produce viable offspring, it's 1 species. if individuals of a distinct population within that species share characteristics with one another that consistently differentiate themselves from the rest of the population, its a subspecies/race
