G'day copper, how's it feel being the human face for a revenue raising computer when you pull a cunt over? I know full well the on board computer is pinging the world around it constantly, uses gps with maps that know the speed limits for every street, that it can read number plates that bring up who the vehicle is registered to, their license information, etc. It issues the penalty before you've even got out of the car to have a chat and all you're doing is being the mouth piece for the machine and confirming that it's issued the fine to the right person. Basically you do your few years at GDs, you then put in for a 4-week stint as a plain clothes cop (working with detectives but not a detective) then you eventually do a bunch of unpaid OT helping them out and when a temporary spot comes up, you get it. Then you eventually one day maybe get a permanent spot. Then a few years later they send you on a detectives course. Keeping in mind you may get spiked at any point along the way if you fall out of favour.

More serious answer - you usually go out west for a few years, do you time and then get a spot as a plain clothes constable in CIB (detective branch). This doesn't make you a detective, mind you. You're off the road and working with them and under detectives and they will flick you jobs you investigate, no juicy ones like murders or rapes yet but you'll do some armed robberies, fraud jobs etc. Your case load will be pretty big, you could have 70 QPRIME tasks at any time outstanding. Each 1 could be things like chasing up footage, taking a statement, preparing a QP9 brief, attending court, doing a warrant up, executing a warrant. So your days are full on.
If you demonstrate aptitude as a plain clothes connie, they'll eventually offer you detective training and you'll get your gold badge.
But from the time you join to this point is easily 5-10 years. Some females did jump the queue when this whole quota shit was on but that is all gone now.
