I'm not sure how many of you had a problem finding yeast. People must have bought up pallets of it early on and are selling it for 5x the regular price. eBay has yet to stop it and it's been going on since mid March.
Thoughts on price gouging
I can't get decent yeast or dry milk on Amazon anymore. And I ain't about to buy a bag covered in moonrunes.
You nigger, yeast is literally everywhere. Mix 50/50 flour and water, leave it outside for a day. Now you have yeast.
$26 for a pound of yeast isnt so bad. i think those little strips of packets cost like $5.
also you can capture real wild yeast for free in just a few days.
Just use wild yeast, cheesecloth, yeast starter (water+sugar boiled), a mason jar. You can put the cheesecloth over top of the jar with the starter in it. Leave it outside for a day near some plants, fruit trees, vegetation, somewhere away from animals and stuff like septic tanks.
You can also wash and culture the yeast from beer. It's really pretty simple, you don't need to buy that shit.
this
I know a cheap source.
Yeast is natural, yeast is in the air and naturally on your hands. You can make a natural starter with only flour and water. Everytime you make a batch of dough set a little aside and you'll always have some. Look up recipes for biga.
I know this, but I needed rapid rising yeast. My issue is that we're allowing people to get away with this during a pandemic and not stringing these pieces of shit up from a tree.
