Believe me, even under Iran, Iraq would be more independent than Serbia is currently, given our position, but Iranians are not that aggressive, and would not satellite your country. And Serbia is much less "treaty" dependent than most countries in Europe. Road to Iraqi independence is paved with steps and this one of US leaving is just another step.

One can ask, if you deem South Korea as independent, just because they are rich, yet have both US military and culture enforced in their country. Case can be made that Germany is the same, but Germans have leverages that Gooks don't. This is coming from a Serb, people which always bleed for independence, take your time, it's shitty but history is in no rush.

I wonder why the Iraqi army was such utter garbage.
Saddam was notoriously bad at the whole military thing and also insisted on making some of the decisions himself, but even so his standing forces got run over so effortlessly I have to wonder how it got so bad.
From what I understand, Iraq didn't even have much in terms of tank shells by the time they got invaded and half their airforce ran away to Iran just to keep the planes from getting destroyed because they understood they don't stand a chance.
