At my university, the university police were a special district within the city that handled safety, traffic enforcement, etc. They were fully licensed police officers but most of ours also had four year degrees. They were a hell of a lot better than the municipal police and, with the exception of a few, complete bro tier. They regularly would chat with the student body, play frisbee or toss the handegg with us, and generally did not issue tickets for underage drinking as long as you were not being belligerent.

Correct, if they're trespassing on private property and/or ignoring posted signs at a private university. First Amendment only applies to the Government a bridging speech or press. If the campus police are executing a magistrate's warrant, they certainly can be arrested.
Not sure what they were doing or where they were at, but they couldn't just go into a classroom and announce "I'm a journalist" and expect to sit for a lecture. They couldn't just waltz into professor's office hours or the dorms or the maintenance facilities and announce "I'm a journalist you can't make me leave".

University and hospital police are a legitimate police force. I don't know a whole lot so maybe I shouldn't speak on it but they can definitely arrest you and their cars have blue lights which are illegal to have unless you're a police officer.
