Albanians were for centuries ruled by foreigners. They were tribes of analfabet sheppards and lacked statehood pretentions. Bizantines, Bulgarians, Serbs, Montenegrins, ruled the different parts in different times, while often Sicily, Naples or Venice controlled ports. Albanians today insist in naming as Principality of Albania an entity ruled by the Anjous which was based in Durres and for a short period expanded inlands. However, at no point there was an independent Albanian state with fully independent Albanian ruler.
Skanderbeg was just another foreign ruler and it is important to understand this aspect. He was the third generation of the Kastrioti noble family that ruled over its domain in central Albania. His granfather Pavle was a commander in the Serbian army and proved his bravury in several batles. As reward, he receved land and title upon his retirement from Stefan Dusan. Dusan was rapidly expanding Serbia towards south, and many of the lands lacked local leadership, so besides the existing nobility, many new nobles were made and land given to them to organise better the tax collecting within the empire. So Pavle Kastrioti becomes local ruler of central Albania and most probably has no previous connections with that land. What we know is that he was Serbian and Orthodox, while his land was scarselly populated with mostly Albanian analfabet sheppards. Despite that, he was well accepted by locals and even expanded his domain progressivelly over time. His son Jovan succeded him. He also spent time in the Serbian military and, following the tradition of Serbian nobility, he contributed to the building and expansion of Serbian culture by financing the expansion of Hilandar monastery where he retired while helping in person the building of what became the Arbanas tower.
Skanderbeg grow at the time Serbian empire was collapsing. He becane the third generation ruler of the Kastrioti´s. Seing Ottomans advancing into what were formerly Bizantine and Serbian lands, he sees that the only way to oppose efficiently to Ottomans was to invert the division between local lords and form alliances. He motivates locals to support him and enlarges his army. They fight to defend the previous existing order against the invading Ottoman one. He addopts the double-headed eagle as his simbol preciselly because it was the already established simbol of Bizantines and Serbs. So practically the Albanian eagle is exactly the one from the Serbian coat of arms. Since his terrotory was inhabited mostly by Albanians, Albanians formed the vast majority of his troops, so in that sense he became the leader of the Albanians, but he was never an "Albanian" himself.

Whether you like Albanians or not, they have always been in that "Albanian" part of the world, since before midevil times. There are common similarities between them and ancient tribes that were in that area long before the middle ages. They also use a latin alphabet and not a slavic or Greek one.
So I'd say it's wrong to call them a fake people. I find them to be interesting because of how much controversy there is surrounding them, their days under communism, and the abundance of bad relationships they have. They dont seem particularly religious, they seem like the most "survival oriented" southern slavs I've studied. Maybe because they're on their own.
