Farming is a fine occupation if the farms and urban centres aren't too far separated. Here in the Netherlands a farm is always going to be near some major population centre. It's EU regulations driving our farmers out of jobs, not their desire to stop doing it.

That's because everyone developed cities and neglected the rural areas as a part of policy of urbanization, which was caused in turn by the need to move huge masses of workforce to the cities for industrialization.
Now that it's apparent that big cities inevitable turn into degenerate cesspools coupled with the fact that digital economy, automatization and better transport infrastructure do not require people to be physically huddled all in one urban center to be productive, seeing as 80% of the modern city population is busy in "service economy" aka bullshit jobs you could totally do away with, a reverse policy of deurbanization is now an option and may serve for a great increase in stability and productivity of the society.

Land is £50k an acre here. Another £50k for a cabin, then extra for taxes and utilities. Not a bad deal compared to the city, just takes a while to save for whilst living at home. I want to buy an old water mill, or house by a river at least, and have a microhydro turbine for power

It would have been better if they had rolled out the reforms slowly instead of the super rapid privatization that created a vacuum and allowed rich buisnesmen to buy up lots of land and left the small farmers shit out of luck. If you drive through South Estonia you see lots of these abandoned old types of farms that were sometimes 100s of years old. Its a shame what has been done to them. Luckily I still own my family farm and take good care of it.

Modern media has pushed for the last 20 years a message that flyover states are filled with stupid people. City people have to continually tell you and each other how important and great they are.
