I've studied this thing for years, and I can tell you that this is an esoteric science and this is the wrong place to ask these questions. No one here will know why it is important. But I will give you a seed that is up to you whether it blossoms.
First of all, Kabbalah is a tradition amongst Jews that allow them to find the true and esoteric interpretation of the Hebrew bible. Kabbalah includes not just the tree of life, but also Gematria and the study of the 22 hebrew letters. Each of them are significant in interpreting the Bible.
For example, if you look at the first seven words in the Hebrew bible (Genesis 1:1), and you add up the values of their first letters using gematria, you get the value 22. Since are 7 words, It happens to be that 22/7 is a famous equation that represents the mathematical pi (3.14). We find the same thing true in English, where the bible starts with the phrase "In the beginning", which has 3 words and 14 letters, hence we have pi encoded here too. In the quran we see the first sentence start with BSM ALLAH (In the name of God) which has the value of 168. This happens to refer to the seven days of creation because 168 is 7 * 24 (a week = 7 days, a day = 24 hours).
Even though this was only one example, I hope you get the point that all religious scriptures, and not just the abrahamic faiths, contain esoteric interpretations that lead to the truth. People might claim this is "new age bullshit" but they are ignorant, and probably haven't done much study in comparative religion.
So, back to the tree of life. Using it to interpret biblical scripture is merely one of many ways to reach enlightenment. You find the same possibilities in all other religions. For instance, In Christianity it's called Gnosticism, in Islam it's called Sufism.
