I've worked in applied physics. "Beam weapons" are extremely difficult to manufacture in any capacity, to the point where I doubt we'll be able to make one in the near future. Keeping a sufficiently intense radiation beam collimated for any reasonable length of time over any reasonable distance is just not possible.

It's not crazy to think they're being pushed by the powers that be in this world to increase bandwidth capabilities, to the point where they might neglect safety. The tests on their safety have always been deceitful.

I don't think it has anything to do with the wuhan cough but safety in large scale projects for the masses historically is almost always limited to what the government tells companies they cannot do. If the powers that be want us to get massive bandwidth in wireless devices due to the limitless surveillance opportunities that will be granted combined with the marketing opportunities i think would be plenty of incentive.

Most people don't even use the full bandwidth provided by LTE, I've heard a strong case for self driving cars making use of the bandwidth. Other than that i can't think of a single benefit provided to the end user by 3gigabit per second throughput. It'll be helpful to a handful of people that regularly upload videos, anyone doing it professionally will still probably go home to finish it.

I've heard people try to say they want to compete with the home internet market, but cable modems just switched to DOCSIS 3.1 some years ago and they'll easily push 10 gigabits per second.

I have no doubt we'll need it eventually, but i don't see why it's this big race like it's being pushed. People on a cellphone have never had anything valuable to contribute to the internet.
