Sourdough can take multiple attempt to get right to an edible degree. It also spoils quickly. That said, learning to bake it is a fine thing everyone should do at somepoint.

Making bread at home is useful right now, if you don't want to go to the store. It's good to have some basic baking knowledge. That being said, baking is a huge pain in the ass and generally not worth the effort under normal circumstances if you have access to a decent bakery. Making bread isn't that difficult, but it is a bit time consuming and messy. Bread at a bakery is dirt cheap and a home oven will never be able to compete with a commercial steam oven. The exception is if you have a bread machine. Then you just dump the shit in and presto you get good, very cheap bread with minimal clean up.

Bullshit. All you have to do to get a good crust that is not 4 inches thick is put some ice cubes on a tray on the bottom of an oven. Its not as good as a steam release but its close. Eat it more often than just once a day and after a couple days turn it into soup sopping bread.

Nah go and make it. 2 kg bag of flour cost me $5 i think. I've been making bread with that for the last 2 weeks for two people. Instead of buying a loaf at $3 to $4, I'm making it when I need it and it takes about 10 minutes for the rolling and kneading. Started a sour dough about week and half ago as well. I did laugh when I saw all these people buying bags and bag of flour with the intention of making bread, because it can be difficult on a dumb cunt level but you pick it up. Fuck the supermarket and bakery jew-bread.
Wrong. Feeding a starter is simply a matter of mixing fresh dough through it once a day. Its a pain if people think hand mixing a 1kg is hard and takes longer than 10-15 mins. Bread making is fucking basic and simple. Something you can teach small children, after one or two attempts you do not even need to supervise them.

It's not difficult, I baked sourdough bread from home made starter while I was in college cheaper than buying bread at the store, not difficult, just takes a little time.
I survived off less than $30 per month for food while going to college.

no, its right. of all the breads to make, sourdough is an extra pain in the ass. you have to feed a live culture of yeast every week like a pet, and it has to occupy room in your fridge. Literally any other bread you can just throw some dry yeast in the day before you make it and you're good to go, with delicious fresh bread. I'd rather just buy sourdough.

you have to dispose half your starter then feed the starter more flour every day, so yeah it's pretty wasteful if you aren't making lots of bread every day (and you're not)
It's also the only option for many people to make bread because yeast is impossible to find in either stores or online. Supermarkets are generally low on bread, and most stores here are requiring people to stand in long lines and enter only a few at a time.
