For having visited all of these states and lived in a few I can give the basic gestalt of each:
>Michigan: cross between a midwestern state in the south and true wilderness in the north. Good if you want to experience the woods without being to far from civilization. Lake climate means it's blisteringly cold and heavy on the snow.
>Wisconsin/Minnesota: the worst of urban cities meets pretty pitiful outdoors. RV parks and the camps of uppermiddleclass city execs litter the landscape. Not the worst if you can find a niche, but there are much better states. Weather is similar to Michigan, but not as bad.
>ND/SD: some of the emptiest states there are. Good for a drive through, but not much else. Badlands in the west of ND are beautiful, but its all national park land. Same with the black hills in SD, super unique place, but swarming with tourists.
>Montana: Mountains upon mountains, real wilderness, but also incredibly poor.
>Idaho: the beginnings of civilization in the north once you leave Minnesota. Similar to Montana in the north of the state, but with more rich fucks from Washington and Boise. South is a lot dryer than anywhere else in your circled area. More Californians every year.

Rapid City/Western SD in general has a surprisingly less brutal climate than the rest of the Dakotas. Still cold as fuck, though. Just not "-40 on the regular" cold.

Montana and really any of the Dakota's have shittier winters. You've got nice scenery in Montana/Idaho though.

I live in Minnesota and really like it in a lot of ways. When I travel around the country, it's clear that Minnesota has a higher genetic quality than a lot of other regions. Better looking and smarter people. It's on the decline though. Reason: Democrats and them thinking they know better (pro tip: they don't)
