We all know that western and eastern art differ wildly. I feel that this divide could help shed light on the unique characteristics of western and eastern cultures. Or perhaps it should be more narrowly studied as US vs Japanese culture. It's pretty clear that the Japanese favor and prioritize cuteness, or "moe". Why is this concept not present in US cartoon art? I feel like it has to do with a lack of subtlety in American culture. Everything is extreme. Extremely loud, extremely strong flavor, or extremely simplistic in this case. A subtle expression of cuteness cannot exist in the presence of such extremes. Thoughts on this? Do you see any other correlations?

another thing interesting that divides japan in usa is there comics industry. in japan a manga has a singular vision brought to life by a mangaka, and sometimes with small help from editors and assistants.
baring filler episodes, movies and fan fiction. there is one singular vision of something like one piece or hunter x hunter. You can easily faithfully adapt a manga to a anime using the manga almost like a story board. western adaptions of comics are almost always different interpretations and don't retell the stories as faithfully as anime. because there isn't a singularly vision
western comics can go on for decades and become entirely things and sometimes that canvas for different interpretation can create something great. i don't know the cultural difference why this reason is.

United states cartoons are meant to be dialogue based because the language is English and english is the most descriptive language. That's why art is lacking in detail. It's also because cartoons were more of a quick short when they were invented in the us because they were supposed to be silly and goofy and it's not very goofy to have an anatomically correct and extremely artistic vision of something while it's making fun of itself. American cartoons later on, once modernized to the 11 minutes per episode, are still very dialogue based because of the price and amount of frames they use, American cartoons are so much harder to produce than anime that it would take so long and so much money for them to have the same quality as anime but in the same high fps. Japanese art has always been based on visuals. Once they saw cartoons made by america they decided to make them as visually appealing as possible. This led to an extremely distinct art style but because of this they use less frames per episode. This enables them to have extremely fine art but in small amounts of frames. But as time goes on, technology gets better, and now they are scanning drawings over paintings to give characters more frames, or scanning characters entirely, etc. They have different rules for animation and frankly their animation is better now probably because of AI and their better funding since anime and video games is a huge export for japan, while a cartoon in america will run out of money in one season unless it is really good. However, the competition for anime has become extremely fierce since the quality is so good so most times animes still run out of money in one or two seasons even if they are well funded their voices and scripts are repetitive and lacking because they did not develop on English. TLDR: American cartoons = better dialogue, better scripts, shitty art, shitty marketing Anime: better art, better marketing, shitty dialogue, shitty scripts

Historically, American animation aesthetics have been heavily focused on caricature and easily identifiable character silhouettes, and on exaggerated motion and expression for those characters. Look at Tom and Jerry, Tex Avery shorts, Looney Tunes, or even 90's animation like the works of Timm and Dini, Genndy Tartakovsky, Craig McCracken, Craig Bartlett, John K, etc etc etc.
Lack of detail is a *very* recent development in American art and animation that's really only become commonplace over the last decade or two as CG, flash, etc have become cost effective alternatives to traditional animation.
