The virus is real. If you want to say it will lead to abuse of power by the government that is a reasonable thing to discuss. Saying the whole thing is a hoax though is just fucking retarded. I don’t expect you to take my word for it but I and many of my family members work in healthcare, and I’ve seen in it first hand. One of our local hospitals where an immediate family member practices has already filled up all of their isolation rooms. The virus is real, claiming otherwise is pure idiocy.

Again though, I do think it is important to discuss how we can prevent our governments from using this as a means of obtaining new draconian power over us. Saying the whole thing is a lie though just reduces our credibility when raising those points.

Being in the same class of virus does not really guarantee much about the pathogen’s risk profile. There are indeed many types of Corona viruses, and while they share some properties they are not all equivalent in potential harm. What I’m saying is that there is in fact currently an outbreak of a highly-transmissible coronavirus that poses greater risk than seasonal flu (for instance). The risk is particularly high for the elderly and people with serious comorbidities like hypertension, heart disease, or a suppressed immune system.

All of those things are true and not a hoax in the slightest. To reiterate, even though all of that is true I do think it is very important for us to discuss how we can prevent serious government overreach. This may well be a critical moment for the world much like 9/11, where governments will attempt to capitalize on widespread fear and panic to enact policies that would otherwise have caused serious public outcry.
