First world, Second World and Third World are cold-war era definitions. They refer to whose side you took after WW2. First world were America, Second world were USSR, and Third world were unaffiliated (later, in the last 1950s, after the Sino-Soviet Split, China appropriated the "Third world" title and pushed Third World Liberation Fronts in every country in Africa and many in Europe and even in America.)
Japan were occupied by America. By definition they were allied with America.
However, if you want to know why they are so advanced it goes back to the history of their opening up in the 1850s. They saw how far behind the rest of the world they were after 200 years of isolation and made a conscious decision to embrace all aspects of western culture. Unlike China or India or Africa, they weren't occupied when the advancements were taking place. Japan had that development gap so the difference between their old culture and the west was incredibly stark and obvious and they recognized that their old culture was a dead-end.

Their zaibatsu were perfect for modern crony corporate "capitalism". This fell apart in early 90s when Japanese bubble popped, leading to China growth.

The way Japan handled economic crisis vs the way Korea did lends itself to Japan's multi decade no growth status. Japan drew capital from its domestic savers, South Korea had none to speak of they were so poor so they sought loans from abroad. When a liquidity crunch hit them, the koreans were forced to restructure their economy and debt which wasn't how they wouldve wanted to handle things but their government guaranteed those foreign held debts so they had no choice. Japanese debt was domestically held, and so their government could refuse to take the medicine of restricting debt and economy until this day. Every Asian country follows Japan's export oriented growth, and every asian country follows Japan's demographics so secular stagnation will catch up to them. China is just fuckhuge so they think theyll escape the flying goose paradigm but we already see capital moving to the other fuckhuge underdeveloped shit hole China once was in India.
