Worked in and around Joint billets for about ten years of my career. Never saw such arrogant fucking pricks as the Naval officers. The most worthless officers are hand down AF. Met a lot of smart Navy officers, but would not want to serve with any of them if there was actual combat involved.

Yes. We have bigger problems. Ship's captains who think they can command like a millennial with a cell phone should not be one of them.

Specifically, you should be looking to the Pacific fleet where all of the collisions have been happening. They suggest that some command hierarchies are not getting their advice taken seriously or that Washington makes service in the other side of the world so awful that all of the skaters are gunning for west coast operation. The Navy does tend to stick you to one side or the other once you go to the fleet. (Yes, I was there for 6 years.)

I'd suggest that the mishaps are due to sleep deprivation occurring under the illusion that it is "discipline". In truth, the UCMJ limits the ways that people can be punished. Officers can not punish you by demanding that you mow his lawn or provide free labor to his church. (I have an reconciled grievance on THAT topic but it's too far gone!) As a result, sleep deprivation is almost like a security blanket for any officer who wants to punish people for reasons that are not really in the Navy's interests to begin with.

In this case, it is very important that we understand that the captain "decided" to defy chain of command protocol and report an incident that he probably did intend to reach the press. He'll have to pay for it with his career, but he might cash in on the talk radio circuit so we'll just let that ride.

Where the secretary of the Navy boned it was when he felt the need to publicly judge and humiliate the captain to the sailors of the ship. It effectively showed complete hypocrisy regarding discrete behavior to the press. If he wanted to show a message, he too betrayed his oath to the president in doing so.

Let the people in charge sort it out.
