Thich Nhat Hanh is a very good author who has written a variety of books. I never really got deep into the actual doctrinal texts of buddhism. There is a lot more practical, everyday material out there that is more useful.

Buddhist practice helped me go from a suicidal depressed wreck to in control of myself and doing pretty well in life. Great book for learning about early buddhism, which was based and aristocratic.
The majority of modern buddhist thought is either nihilistic or gay and western.
Would also recommend you look into the vedas, the most ancient and based of indo-aryan religious texts.

Buddhism shares a historical link with Christianity through the Nestorian branch. It began in Afghanistan and the original Gautama Buddha was probably this historical Gaumata Bardiya who was a son of Cyrus the Great. He briefly ruled Persia before Darius usurped rule and claimed that he was a magi imposter.
