The reason why, which is quite insidious i can explain too, I only suspected it till lately but COVID-19 proved it in raw daylight to me.

It's a political weapon. the NHS is turned into a religion to achieve whatever political goals the administration wants to lobby for. You have to understand, that the UK political system is much more left leaning even on the Tory party than even the democrat party of the USA.

The working class in the UK are essentially a sub class, harvested for voters. The UK is a welfare state and gives them what they need to survive, this created generations of impoverished and uninspired and unmotivated working class communities.
To think they would ever have to pay for their healthcare in any capacity (even like Japan's system for example) even if a small contribution resulted in better facilities is in direct opposition to this mindset bred into the working class. They working class have nothing, so at least they have their health, and free health care is their only solace.
The politicians readily weaponize this, and create the NHS into a religion to push whatever narrative they need. It's essentially, a very easy way to placate a sizable portion of voters while doing anything else you want. As long as they use the NHS religion as some justification for what they do, the working class will go with it.

COVID-19 put this in broad daylight. They wanted these working class people to stay home and listen, but they wouldn't. the way the did it was to start a huge campaign of "do it for them" ie, the NHS workers. adverts and slogans everywhere of NHS staff "stay at home for ME, so i can help you!"
