My empathy is for his struggle not to kill. Heavy on consciousness, but the real world will often force you to get some blood on your hands. Also just being forced to take a job you dont want, but I'm far from experiencing the same life as him and can only sympathize, not empathize.
I didnt pick up the critique of the otaku culture during the series tho.
