There were many pagan writings (at least in the greek, roman, and germanic faiths) before the imposition of christianity. They were destroyed in order to sever the people from their heritage so there would be no possible way to go back. It's only in the germanic case that it succeeded, leaving only scant surviving records from believers and some christian documentation of their beliefs as to aid in converting the few who remained. If this had happened to christianity it would be the same, just with you on the end of being called a larper.
