I stopped taking Ted Talks seriously when they started to get traction with the mainstream audiences. Topics stopped being cerebral after the organisers got a taste of popularity.

The one with a new form of 3d printing where the object arose from a puddle of goo was pretty good, especially since a year or so later that technology was available for purchase. But then it became most virtue signally like you said and the interesting talks got pushed out for sociology bullshit.

"TEDx" are not TED talks. You can just sign up to be on the channel effectively.

There's TED and there's TEDx. TED are curated events for which speakers and speeches are controlled. TEDx can be organized by anyone and anywhere, which is how OP's talk and happen. They are both pseudointellectual circle jerking, but they are different.

Some of the TEDx events are ridiculously specific in their nonsense. My favorite is TEDxCentennialParkWomen. What is Centennial Park? It's a small park in downtown Atlanta most famous for being the site of the Olympic bombing that Richard Jewel kept from being much worse. So they have an entire TEDx event pandering to women who live or work near this park.

Came here to draft some brilliant response and then saw that this user said it better than I ever could.

Ted talks started out pretty good -- were kind of a collection of smart people from lots of different areas who came together to share thoughts about their work.

I think for one thing it all got diluted as it grew. That part was kind of inevitable.

Another aspect though, is that there is no DEBATE at Ted talks. If you go to academic conference, especially science, you will see people -- sometimes harshly -- QUESTIONING the speakers. Sometimes (often?) they are dicks about it but there is SOME semblance of keeping people honest.

Ted talk meanwhile, is more more and more about muh "we have to do better (and follow me and invest in my startup or hire me as a consultant)" There's nothing keeping the speakers honest and it just goes down hill.
