This case started with a government program which set up a hotline for people to call in with complaints of sexual abuse in religious institutions anonymously. I looked at the list years ago and found that it was almost entirely Christian churches. So in reality it was just an anti-Christian pogrom.
Pell voluntarily returned from the Vatican to face his charges and strongly maintained his innocence from day one. When I read the court reporting it seemed like a slam dunk the evidence against him was so shoddy, but somehow the jury was hung and it was a mistrial. I didn't follow the second court case but just heard he was convicted anyway. Glad he got out of this bullshit.
