The death rate is much lower due to the fact that many infected never get tested. The real number of infected is around 20-30 times higher, meaning that the death rate is 20-30 times lower.
And not only that.. The average age of the deceased in Italy is around 80. Many of these people would have probably died anyway. In these situations, there should be areas reserved for pop-up hospitals and reserve supplies for them. Locking down the world and killing everyone's ability to provide is not a good trade-off.
