I had to look at 4 of the pictures, but I think what they're trying do is teach mental math techniques instead of letting the kids develop their own internal mental math techniques naturally. So, instead of saying solve 8 + 6, you say write an expression that evaluates to the same value as 8 + 6 where one of the terms is a 10, but because the people developing these problem sets are clearly stupid and lack vocabulary words like expression, you end up with incomprehensible headache-inducing garbage like pics related.

Common core is actually pretty good. Some teachers are bad at it, but it's mostly dumb boomers who are bad at math. The general ideas behind it focus on foundational ideas of math, instead of rote memorization and using mechanical methods to compute values that teach no real skills, especially now when everyone has a calculator.
This is a good example. They are clearly teaching to add by comleteting tens then remainders but the father is a retard and cant figure it out. They are saying 8 + 9 = (8 + 2) + (9 - 2) = 10 + 7 = 17. Its trivial with small numbers but when doing large computations this concept is very useful.

Algebraic basics should be explained first before this unit, but they think your kids are too much of a tool-shed to understand the concepts of variable replacement and factoring.
You'd be surprised at how terrible teachers are at introducing this bedrock concepts. I remember how terrible they were at communicating it when I was in grade-school and I've heard it a thousand times from others.
In the end, "Common Core" is failing because even seniors in the teaching profession don't know how to communicate new but simple concepts effectively.
I strongly suggest common core advocates hire and engage technical writers from the devops field. They tend to do a much better job of this.

There are different techniques for solving the same math problem. You have a personal bias for the one that you were taught and or one that better resonates with your own way of thinking. Exposing kids to more ways of solving the same problem isn't a problem but shoe horning one size fits all problem solving that doesn't address the underlying theory of why or how something is done is a problem.
