Long term ventilation (above a week) runs a rather high risk of permanent lung damage due to "unnatural" pressure differential in the lung tissue ... and issue which could be solved with the newest generation of ventilators which don't just blow you up like a bloody balloon. For one, the damage isn't "permanent". FEV1% improves slowly over time as the lungs heal on their own
Secondly, this isn't something special about the coronavirus. It's the exact same mechanism and process that occurs with ANY form of pneumonia. You could just as easily say something sensationalist like "100% OF THOSE WITH THE FLU WHO DEVELOP PNEUMONIA AND NEED INTUBATION HAVE SEVERE LUNG DAMAGE AFTER THEY RECOVER"
Fact of the matter remains that, no differently than with the flu, the vast majority of people who get this infection have mild upper RTI symptoms akin to a cold or flu. There are a fraction who develop a pneumonia and require hospitalization and might die, but this is a small number of people who are extremely old and/or have preexisting conditions. To elaborate a bit on this, it not only depends on the pressure but also on the "rhythm" of the ventilation as well as how quickly and in what way you build and release the pressure. Our cells have integrated "pressure sensors", proteins on their surface which are connected to neighboring cells almost like a Velcro fastener. If these sensors receive the "wrong" signals from a less than ideal extension of the lung tissue by the ventilator they can over the long term trigger an inflammation and contribute to lung cell death (together with the damage the virus is already doing). Based on these experiences new ventilation regimens have been developed but afaik older models are incapable of running these due to "primitive" air pump design.
Everything kills healthy and young people too. You aren't guaranteed a sufficient immune response regardless so we'll have to see actual data rather than your fairy tales.

Ventilators are a big deal because for some reason Gov. Cuomo chose them as his metric for preparedness. He is raiding other states and other parts of his own state to send them all to NYC, even though there are larger problems like 10,000 NYPD and FDNY calling in sick.

Pneumonia fucks you because the little tiny airsacks in your lungs fill with fuid. These air sacks are essentially the sponge your blood uses to soak up oxygen, but now there's a bunch of crap in the way and the oxygen physically can't get to the blood to be absorbed. Pumping more oxygen in can't save you from this, anymore than pumping food down the throat of someone with a non-functional stomach can save them from starving to death. Only direct oxygenation of the blood through ECMO can save you in this situation, too bad it costs $10,000 a day and requires round the clock care from a full team of support staff.
