It's real, though there's a lot of misinformation. The only "torture" that exists in hell is you burn. Some more than others obviously. Sure the bible says even petty sinners go there, but it's common sense to assume that an alcoholic won't suffer as much as a serial killer. The word "eternity" in the bible can also mean for a time or for an age. You burn until your soul is destroyed. You cease to exist. It's the same punishment the angels will get. Nobody is in hell or heaven right now either. Everybody that's dead from the past and present are unconscious, in whatever void that holds the dead. Everybody gets judged at the same time in the future.

if you die and leave your body behind how can you feel the heat of flames.
also hell is a concept used to scare people into not lynching all bankers, religious leaders, government officials at the same time

God has no reason to torture you for fucking up your insignificant little life. God is perfection. To sin is to err or make a mistake. We are all sinners because only god is perfect. A religious person trying to be closer with god is trying to be more perfect and as a result he will improve his life and the welfare of people around him. An unrepentant sinner sees nothing wrong with his choices and as a result will get worse and cause trouble for himself and others. Hell is where every unrepentant sinner ends up but it is a state of existence that they create for themselves in this life.

This is what I believe as well - the Old Testament can be a reference here as long as you don't rely on retarded Christian Doctrine: The word used is sheol - which is literally a hole in the ground. Hell is a mechanism created by Satan's influence on Christian religions to control morons.

It's real, just not how you might think of it. For example the Bible makes it pretty clear Hell is for those who know God and still choose to reject Him, not for any and all. There's some evidence this may refer most directly to Jews themselves in their rejection of Christ. Those who persist in sinful lifestyles even after being warned repeatedly are also hellbound. What is actually there is unclear, but if you go by Near Death Experiences it is certainly not pleasant.
