The smallest unit of society is an individual. An individual should be able to function and survive even if their family falls apart. Imagine if every cell in your body was able to survive on its own. You would be indestructible. The same applies to a nation. A nation made up of units made up of smaller units made up of smaller units, is an invulnerable nation as long as those units are able to exist independently and survive in the hypothetical scenario that the unit above them is shattered.

There are interactions between members of families that can be likened to interactions between members of a society. You can not say the same about interactions between an individual and themself.
