there are loads of designs out there, but they're definitely not created equal. even just taking a 100% cotton t-shirt or a pillowcase (you want a tight weave) and getting a tight fit around your mouth and nose will give you 50-60% protection against similar sized particles. I haven't had to go out in a while other than to walk, so I haven't made a mask yet, but I'm thinking I'll make this one using an old pillowcase (most breathable according to this study ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7108646/)

The valved type will still prevent large droplets from blowing for meters so still not as bad as no mask at all. Even a snood/scarf is good enough to preventrr large droplets spreading.
