Guess what? Only niggers can't pass Technician Level exam. If you're white you have nothing to worry about. That Baofeng is for 2M, which means you only need a Tech level license to use it. As a white man with above average memory and IQ, I studied hard for a month and passed all 3 levels in one sitting.

Yes, it's only illegal to transmit. You can listen all you want. But again, it's pretty easy to pass the Tech exam. My 14 year old son is studying for the Tech level and he already has a lot of the questions down. Then again, he's white and therefore smart.

Its completely safe to use it on FRS/GMRS/MURS.

Look up the frequencies and program them into your radio.
Baofeng works on 2m and 70cm bands which are *generally* limited to line of sight. You will not be talking long distance with this radio no matter what antenna you bolt on.

The baofeng is useful for local coordination and communication, but you'd need to have a group of people who've figured out comms protocol.

The baofeng can get you in trouble because it can transmit on emergency services communications frequencies. Look up your local freqs at radiorefference dot com and make sure you dont fuck with them.

Also you can transmit on the Ham frequencies and annoy boomers. Unless you transmit for a long time/multiple times and from the same location, you wont be easily found. But there isnt much point beyond being a dick. You can stick to the legal frequencies and communicate with your friends in the woods safely.
Yes i know the Baofeng transmits at an illegal wattage and is not an FCC rated radio for FMRS/GMRS/MURS. Nobody gives a shit in reality.

VHF/UHF is fun but you need to connect to repeaters as it is limited to line of sight. If you actually want to be serious you need to get an HF set up.

Look up FRS/GMRS/MURS channels. Program them into your radio. Now you can talk "legally" without bothering anyone. Transmitting off these frequencies is not recommended.

The problem isnt really ham people, its that unless you educate yourself you may end up transmitting on your local fire department or EMS or hospital services channel and fucking them up. Or even police. In those cases you will probably get in trouble.

Using a radio beyond FRS/GMRS/MURS requires that you educate yourself, at which point you may as well go for the license.
However at this time you cannot get a license because theyve shut down most testing due to the covid crisis, so its a big catch 22.

By all means, get your baofeng and learn how to work it, just dont be a dick for no reason and possibly fuck yourself.

A UV-5R will only reach about 2 miles so unless you live really close to a police station or a cop is driving no ones going to hear you anyways.

Not true. Range is dependent on a lot of factors and what repeater you may be using.

With the stock antenna and no elevation, maybe.
I live on a hill less than a mile away from the county courthouse and sheriff's station, and only 2 miles from the city police. I could easily interfere, if they werent on digital now.
So my advice stands generally speaking dont transmit on 1st responder freqs because theres high risk and no real reason to do so.
Lets assume someone motivated and knowledgable enough to get on a repeater will also not be stupid and ignorant enough to try and talk on 1st responder frequencies.

A neighbor down the road from me has a massive repeater in his back yard, has to be about 200 feet fully up. It has some kind of motor/crank to do it.

Yes, you can receive RF with no issue. You're not messing with the transmission, and therefore it's on the transmitter to manage their messaging.

Also, some groups (military, maybe some law enforcement) will use encrypted comms, so listening in won't yield useful information (assuming they're using good crypto).

nobody seems to use Black Hills area repeaters at all, it's always dead silent. I even got a better antenna and I live on a hill and everything. only thing I've been able to find is some jail or prison nearby, the night guards sometimes shoot the shit on 453.145, came across that randomly while scanning. would've thought there was more ham shit going on out here

It's because most young people aren't getting into radio because they have phones and internet now. You show most people a HAM radio and they don't see the point. The funny thing is, the FCC database for ham licenses is available online and you can look up their home address based on the callsign they give. So you can find out way more about them than they can about you.
