“On (March) 20th, he went into the hospital and things went downhill quickly from there,” Garrett's nephew Brandon Guthrie said. “… When he went into the hospital, he was having a hard time talking or even texting. It took him three days to text me back a ‘thank you’ when I wished him well. He was in bad shape by then.”
Garrett had all of the symptoms associated with COVID-19 — fever, cough, fatigue, body aches, tightness in his chest and difficulty breathing. A preliminary test for the new coronavirus was lost, but the second came back negative, Guthrie said.
“They said he had every single symptom of COVID and ended up getting pneumonia, too,” Guthrie said. “They treated him as if he had it, too.”
The father of four died Tuesday at Poudre Valley Hospital, and his death will likely be counted as a coronavirus-related fatality in Larimer County, the health department said Thursday.
