Right now only inpatient cases are being tested for the most part. That right off the bat biases fatality rate because you are only testing the worst 20% of all cases.

Most recent studies show that there's a massive cohort of asymptomatic people that don't ever present for testing or treatment. When you start to factor in that cohort, the fatality rate plummets.

When we calculate flu fatality rate, we include an estimate of asymptomatic/non-presenting cases because by nature a large portion of flu sufferers never present for care or testing.

That isn't being done with COVID-19.

If you remove the estimated asymptomatic/non-presenting cases from the flu fatality calculations, the fatality rate for influenza ends up being north of 10% as well.

As someone who does primarily family practice, influenza and RSV still worry me more because of their proclivity towards causing severe conditions in infants and toddlers.
