Deaf people are a cult. The vast majority of hearing loss is fully treatable with modern medicine (like cochlear implants). But the deaf community places a huge value on the shared culture of signing, and will shun and exclude people who pursue treatments to let them hear. Some people even have their implants removed to better "fit in" to the deaf community. The whole thing is fucked. Apparently they have enough influence to get this shit on national TV.
