I went to a private Christian school where the material was like 2 years ahead of private school. In 2nd grade we had timed tests where everyone tried to get as many multiplication or addition problems correct in a few minutes and those who got the most correct were rewarded with candy and shit and they would rank you on the whiteboard. So you see 20 in the numerator, and the equation: 5(2x2), in the denominator.

Meaning you could divide at any time, the pieces in the denominator against the numerator, and you’d still get one.

Absolutely agree with. I am a Sr Engineer and have a PE in mechanical engineering. Math is useless outside the constructs of an actual application or real world problem.

Yes, I think it should be 16. That's also how most common programming languages would evaluate it. But, I think, there were even some calculators that would evaluate it differently. Plus, there are even some math professors who seem to say that this is ambiguous.

I can't think of a single mathematical text where this would be read as 1, though. If the first was really ever convention anywhere, I think it's time for that convention to die.

If they were trying to simplify math with common core, I think they failed badly and are only adding more confusion.
