Did you have enough money to buy a house when you moved out of your parents house? If you didn't, you ended up renting from someone.
Renting is what people do while they save up to buy, or they wait until they are more stable. Some people end up moving around a lot because of their job.
RENTING IS NOT EVIL. BEING A LANDLORD IS NOT EVIL.
The problem comes when the landlord stops working and making money outside of their properties. If you retire while you still have mortgages, then you will be fucked during any economic downturn.

You must never have had a mortgage before. Even with a "good" interest rate, well over 50% of the money you pay towards your mortgage for the first few years is only going towards interest. It takes years to start actually making a dent in the principle compared to what your paying each month.
