Just because a virus isn't as "virulent" doesn't mean its going to die out... Shit, it can easy be argued that a less virulent behavior is a superior adaptation. If a virus induces an extreme response then the host species will adapt its behavior to it. Those that don't respond or aren't naturally immune will die out and with them goes the virus itself. It is evolutionary preferable to play the long game.
What we are doing now is little better then putting out small wildfires. Sure it feels like the right thing to do, but letting the dead underbrush pile up is simply inviting disaster.
